Ulster
Age:
Larva
Deceased:
no
Notes:
Warm steady rain, ~50F, unusual for December. Good salamander activity. Found a single individual of this species, four salamander species total, ~25 individuals total.

First two photos are with flash, last photo is no flash and inside my lens cap for scale. Individual was found with freshly damaged tail.

Original ID was Gyrinophilus porphyriticus, but later changed ID to Pseudotriton ruber ruber. Body doesn't appear long enough and snout is too short for Gyrinophilus, especially for such a large larvae that is close to metamorphosis. In addition, this is the only documented location in Ulster County (that I'm personally aware of) for Pseudotriton ruber ruber. The original voucher of an adult for this county on Herpmapper was photographed a half mile from this larvae.
