There are only two species of turtle in the area. The other is the red-eared slider, Trachemys scripta where it is used to humans. But the Western Pond Turtle is timid by nature and always retreats to the water when humans approach too close. There was a small red-ear slider nearby where this photo was taken but it didn't retreat to the water while the pond turtle did.
